It's January once again, folks, which means the People's Choice Awards show is right around the corner -- January 5 to be exact! The show's been held annually for 36 years, which means there's a wealth of memorable moments from its nearly four-decade run on the air. From
Julia Roberts's shaved underarms to Tony Danza's frenetic hosting gig, we take a look back at some unforgettable PCA moments.
Sandra Bullock thanks Jesse James, goofs off with Ryan Reynolds
Bullock's win for Favorite Movie Actress (and Favorite Comedy with Ryan Reynolds for "The Proposal") kicked off her milestone year, which included highs, like her first Oscar win, and lows like the dramatic dissolution of her marriage to Jesse James. During her acceptance speech Bullock thanked her husband Jesse, saying that he is her "boyfriend" and crediting him for keeping things "settled" while she's away. Bullock and Reynolds, who goofed around together on the PCA red carpet, spent 2011 New Year's together, setting off rumors that the recently-single actors were getting cozy. Hey, maybe they're just old pals.
You gotta love 1980s-era Oprah Winfrey -- the years of big hair and big earrings. Here she is with Cybill Shepherd in 1987 after her win for Favorite Talk Show Host, the first of what will be six People's Choice Awards she will win in the following years. Cybill had a
memorable acceptance speech that year for her "Favorite Female TV Performer" win, saying "I can't believe I got in this dress. It didn't happen overnight, let's put it that way."
Jane Fonda and Sally Field tie for Favorite Movie Actress
Jane Fonda and Sally Field caused a lot of awkward audience seat-shifting when they both took the stage to accept their Best Movie Actress awards. The actresses thanked their fans and families but then turned their
attentions to the typewritten plaque on the awards. Sally Field called it "Tacky." A 17-year-old Brooke Shields took home an award the same year for Best Young Motion Picture Performer and managed to plug her film "Sahara" on the air.
Patrick Swayze smooches Whoopi Goldberg
Onstage moments are what most people get to see, but there are also better things that happen when the stars go backstage after they accept their awards. In 1995, Patrick Swayze gave his "Ghost" costar Whoopi Goldberg a big smooch on the cheek after her win for
Favorite Actress in a Comedy Motion Picture.
Gary Coleman wins four times in a row
"Diff'rent Strokes" star Gary Coleman won awards for Favorite Young Performer every year from 1980 to 1983, when he was still in his early teens. Little Gary was so short that he could barely see over the podium, but he was a natural performer and managed to get through his
acceptance speeches without a hitch.
Meryl Streep thanks Jane Fonda
Legendary actress Meryl Streep was a household name even back in the 1990s, but she still had veteran actresses to thank. After Jane Fonda handed her the award for Favorite Movie Actress in 1990, Streep thanked Fonda personally for supporting her career for so long.
We love it when actors give shout-outs to their mentors.
Julia Roberts shows us her pits
There's a good reason why Julia Roberts is considered America's Sweetheart. Besides being cute as a button, she also has the ability to not take herself too seriously. While onstage to accept the Favorite Movie Actress award in 2000, Roberts immediately exclaimed, with
arms outstretched, "I'm so glad I shaved my underarms!" So are we, Julia. So are we.
Ashton Kutcher tweets from the stage
Part-time actor, full-time compulsive Twitter user Ashton Kutcher was the winner of the first ever Online Sensation (formerly known as Web Celeb) award, and for very good reason. Kutcher was tweeting, TwitPicing and promoting his Twitter handle, @aplusk, even while onstage with
Jessica Alba. Hey, he must have interesting things to tweet. Six million Twitter followers can't be wrong, can they?
Ellen DeGeneres jokes with Oprah
While accepting her award for Favorite TV Talk Show Host, Ellen DeGeneres jokingly apologized to Oprah Winfrey and expressed her sadness that the Queen of All Media's show had been canceled. Sadly, we don't think Oprah was in the audience to offer any choice
cut-away-to-the-audience shots.
Reese Witherspoon jokes about win
Reese snagged the Favorite Female Movie Star award in 2009, a few years after winning an Oscar in 2006, which was the same year as her split from hubby Ryan Phillippe. "A couple years ago I won a great award for singing in a movie," Witherspoon remarked upon winning her PCA award. "This year I won an award for having a baby throw up on me," she joked, referring to her 2008 film "Four Christmases." Hey, it takes a great actress to hold back the gag reflex when baby spit-up comes into the picture.
Tony Danza debuts rap career ... kind of
Judging from his outrageous opening as host of the People's Choice Awards in 2003, it's clear that Tony Danza understands the importance of a first impression. Danza came out on stage as his alter-ego Italian Ice and proceeded to rap/namedrop some of the nominees. Let's
hope he doesn't quit his day job (whatever that is these days).
Captain & Tennille perform 'Muskrat Love'
Sometimes the musical performances are equally (or even more) memorable than the acceptance speeches and behind-the-scenes moments. In 1977, Captain & Tennille performed their hit "Muskrat Love" dressed as furry creatures that we can only assume are supposed to be muskrats.
