The National Enquirer reports that disgraced presidential candidate John Edwards may be officially engaged to former mistress Rielle Hunter, just weeks after the death of his estranged wife Elizabeth Edwards.
According to the tabloid, the former senator introduced his children to Hunter, who was not just his mistress but also gave birth to his love child Frances Quinn, now two years old.
The Enquirer report bashes Edwards for callously disregarding his heartbroken wife’s dying wishes. The tabloid also severely criticizes Hunter, alleging that she directed his children to “call me Mommy.” The tabloid alleges that Edwards pledged his love to Hunter and promised that they would “become one big, happy family.”
The news reports of the alleged engagement have been making the rounds throughout the day, all citing the Enquirer’s exclusive report. Among the news services picking up the tab from the tabloid are The Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune.
Neither Edwards, Hunter or any other named sources have been cited in any of the relevant reports, including that of the Enquirer, so official confirmation of the engagement has not yet been established. According to The Washington Post, the tabloid has had a relatively checkered past with their coverage of Edwards’ infidelity. The Enquirer did break the news of his affair and accurately reported that he is the father of Hunter’s child. However, it first issued reports of an engagement in February 2010, which turned out to be “absolutely untrue” according to a spokeswoman at the time.
Despite widespread coverage, news sources are cautious about the veracity of the reports, and until there is further confirmation from other reliable sources, many headlines and articles are sticking with a vocabulary of “supposed” reports and “allegations.”
Our take: This could all be a mistake or faulty report, and no other sources have come forward to confirm that the cheating politician will marry his home-wrecking baby mama.
We will keep you updated if there are any developments to this story. Regardless, is there really any wonder why Elizabeth Edwards left him out of her will? We certainly don’t blame her.
